What is Jin Shin Jyutsu acupressure?
The art of Jin Shin Jyutsu (JSJ) is an ancient, highly developed form of acupressure that helps the body release stress and tension. The principles behind JSJ are similar to acupuncture, but no needles are used. Rather, sites on the body that affect known energy pathways are gently held by the practitioner. During the treatment the client remains fully clothed, resting on his/her back. JSJ operates on the principle that illness is caused by energy blockages in the body. By clearing these blockages, a sense of health and well being can be restored.
An advantage to using JSJ acupressure is the fact that once learned, it can be self-administered. In other words, once you learn the self-care acupressure sequences you can treat yourself at home. People can even practice certain "holds" at work, or in stressful situations to help them improve mental and physical performance.
What is the history of Jin Shin Jyutsu acupressure?
It's believed that various forms of Jin Shin Jyutsu acupressure were practiced before the time of Moses and Buddha. In the 1400's the Japanese emperor ordered that this art be written down because it was starting to disappear. It was later rediscovered through personal experience by Japanese scientist and sage, Jiro Murai, in the mid-1900's His student, Mary Burmeister, later brought JSJ acupressure to the United States. She eventually opened an office in Scottsdale, Arizona. People from all over the world continue to go there for healing and training in the art of JSJ acupressure.
How does Jin Shin Jyutsu acupressure work?
JSJ works with energy pathways that traverse the body like power lines feeding life to all of our cells. When tension from physical or emotional stress interrupts the flow of energy the body starts to manifest symptoms. The flow of energy is reinstated by holding specific sites on the body in sequence.
Why does holding specific sites on the body help relieve symptoms like physical discomfort and inflammation?
The sites that are held in JSJ acupressure are energy centers called "Safety Energy Locks" (SELs). They are like electrical power substations where power lines converge, or like circuit breakers in your house that shut down and need to be opened to allow electricity to flow again.
When energy becomes blocked at these SELs due to tension caused by physical or emotional stress, various holds and sequences of holds are used to help release the constriction or blockage. JSJ posits that pain is caused by blocked energy. When this "stuckness" is released by holding the appropriate SELs, energy is able to flow freely through the body again, and symptoms are relieved.
Jin Shin Jyutsu acupressure can be applied directly to the physical body through touch; it can also be applied to the energy field with no touching.
Can JSJ work with conventional medicine?

What Can I Expect in a "Hands-off" Session?
Just as in a "hand-on" session, you relax face-up on a massage table, fully-clothed, with shoes removed. There is no physical contact during the session; the practitioner will work with her hands anywhere from a few inches to several feet away, for 30-35 minutes.
The best way to experience the session is to simply relax and notice what occurs. Close your eyes and just let go - let your mind wander - notice and observe whatever it is that you experience or do not experience without being attached to specific outcomes.
